Freelance columnist Alan Emerson was last night announced as the 38th winner of the Ravensdown Agricultural Communicator of the Year award.

The award recognises and honours individuals and groups that have made important contributions to the agricultural community by using their skills to effectively communicate issues, events, and information that are relevant to the sector.

Emerson is best known in the rural sector as a regular columnist in the award-winning farming title, The NZ Farmers Weekly. But he has a much wider circle of influence, boosted by regular writing assignments in other publications, including a weekly rural issues column for his local Wairarapa regional daily newspaper the Times-Age, writing several books on farming topics.

Presenting the award was previous Ravensdown Agricultural Communicator of the Year recipient, Bryan Gibson. He read a couple of comments from that award’s judges, who stated that “You’d be hard pushed to find someone who has the breath of knowledge and insight to New Zealand’s primary sector as Alan Emerson” and that “you can always count on Alan to take an intelligent and independent view on issues that are important to the sector”.

Hayley Gavan, President of the New Zealand Guild of Agricultural Journalists and Communicators said, “We’re proud to recognise the immense contribution Alan has made to the rural sector through his lifetime of service. For most people, his weekly column in the NZ Farmer is essential reading”.
